Terms of use

Version of 21 October 2026

This is a previous version. It applied until 30 October 2026. The current version: Terms of use.

This is a translation of the Russian text. If they differ, the Russian text prevails.

1. General

  1. These terms govern the use of Okuma, a web app for learning foreign languages, available at okuma.pro and app.okuma.pro, and of its mobile versions (the «Service»).
  2. The Service is provided by Ian Shtern («we»). Contact: shternyan@gmail.com.
  3. By signing up for or using the Service, you confirm that you have read and accept these terms. If you don’t agree with them, don’t use the Service.
  4. How personal data is processed is described in the privacy policy, which is part of these terms.

2. Account

  1. The Service may be used by people aged 13 and over. If the law of your country requires parental consent for this, you confirm it has been given.
  2. An account is created with an email address or with Google sign-in. The account is personal and may not be passed to anyone else.
  3. You are responsible for keeping access to your email safe and for what is done from your account.
  4. Part of the Service works without an account: the course, the library, your word list and reviews. Without an account, your progress is kept only in this browser and is deleted after 7 days without a visit; we are not responsible for losing it, for example when browser data is cleared. New content made for you (texts, audio, answers to questions, speaking exercises, conversations) needs an account.

3. Price and the Okuma Plus subscription

  1. The Service is free to use. Creating new content for you (texts, audio lessons, answers to questions, conversations, speaking exercises) is subject to daily limits. We may change the limits to keep the Service running.
  2. The paid Okuma Plus subscription lifts the daily limits on creating new content. What it includes and its price are shown on the pricing page and in the Service before you pay. To keep the Service running for everyone, the subscription has a fair daily ceiling on use that normal study doesn’t reach.
  3. Accounts created before the subscription was introduced keep free access to every feature that was free on that date, for as long as the account exists.
  4. The subscription is for one month and is paid in advance. It renews automatically, and the fee is charged at the start of each new month until you cancel. There is no free trial.
  5. You can cancel at any time in the Service’s settings. The subscription stays active until the end of the paid month, and you won’t be charged again. The fee for the current month is not refunded on cancellation, except as set out in clause 3.6.
  6. Within 14 days of your first subscription payment you can get a full refund by writing to shternyan@gmail.com. After a refund the subscription ends at once. Any refund rights you have under mandatory law are not affected.
  7. If a renewal payment fails, the subscription stays active for 3 more days while the payment provider retries. If the payment still doesn’t go through, the subscription ends.
  8. Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders paid with non-Russian cards, provides customer service enquiries and handles returns; Paddle’s buyer terms also apply to those payments. Payments with Russian cards are handled by Lava.top. We never receive or store your card details.
  9. We announce a price increase at least 14 days before the next charge. The new price applies from the next paid month, and you can cancel before then.

4. Learning materials

  1. Texts, translations, explanations, audio and pronunciation scores are created automatically, including with artificial intelligence models. We check their quality but don’t guarantee they are free of mistakes.
  2. The materials are meant for learning a language on your own and don’t replace professional translation, a teacher or an official exam. We don’t guarantee reaching a particular level or result within a particular time.
  3. Texts the Service writes for you on a randomly chosen topic may be placed in the Service’s shared library, without your name or other data. Texts on a topic you set and texts you uploaded yourself are never placed in the shared library.

5. Your content

  1. You can upload texts and links to read and enter your own topics («your content»). You confirm that you have the right to use it this way and are responsible for what it contains.
  2. Solely to provide the Service to you, you grant us a free, non-exclusive right to store and process your content and pass it to the providers listed in the privacy policy. The right ends when the content or the account is deleted.

6. Rights to the Service

  1. The code, design, course, text library and other materials of the Service belong to us or are used lawfully.
  2. You may use them only within the Service and only for personal, non-commercial learning. Copying, distributing, selling them or using them to train other models without our written consent is not allowed.

7. Not allowed

  1. Getting around the limits, including by creating several accounts.
  2. Accessing the Service by automated means other than an ordinary browser and our apps, or putting excessive load on it.
  3. Uploading, or trying to get through the Service, content that breaks the law or the rights of others.
  4. Interfering with the Service, accessing other people’s accounts and data, or probing the Service for vulnerabilities without our consent.

If these terms are broken, we may restrict access to the Service or delete the account.

8. Liability

  1. The Service is provided «as is». We may change its features and pause it for maintenance, and we don’t guarantee it will run without interruption.
  2. To the extent allowed by applicable law, we are not liable for indirect losses, lost profits or data loss arising from using the Service or being unable to use it.
  3. Nothing in these terms limits rights the law gives you as a consumer that can’t be limited by contract.

9. Ending

  1. You can delete your account in the Service’s settings at any time. How, and what happens then, is described on the deleting your account page. Deleting the account cancels an Okuma Plus subscription at once; the fee for the current month is not refunded, except as set out in clause 3.6.
  2. If we decide to shut the Service down, we will tell users at least 30 days in advance and refund the unused part of the paid month.

10. Changes to these terms

  1. We may change these terms. A new version is published on this page with its date.
  2. We announce significant changes in the Service or by email at least 14 days before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after that date, you accept the new version.

11. Disputes

  1. Send complaints to shternyan@gmail.com. We reply within 30 days.
  2. If a dispute isn’t settled, it is resolved under the applicable law, taking into account the mandatory consumer protection rules of the country where you live.
